The Pre-Test Basic Science Review series is designed to simulate the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1, which medical students take between their second and third years of medical school. These 500 question, answer and explanation books tap into students' examination anxiety - the questions allow students to hone their exam-taking skills, and the referenced answers/expanations provide students with brief, high-yield subject reviews. Each book contains a section of high-yield facts that emphasize key concepts.

The USMLE is becoming increasingly clinical in nature. Many questions have taken the form of clinical vignettes, integrating several subjects and emphasizing problem solving. These new questions often require students to use a 'two-step' reasoning process. The new edition of this book is thoroughly revised to eliminate all outdated question types (such as matching sections and negatively-phrased questions) and replace them with single-best-answer multiple-choice questions. Many new questions are in two-step clinical format to simulate the USMLE Step 1.

The revision will also contain simpler questions to test basic science knowledge, which is integral to students' abilities to answer two-step questions. 'Pathology: Pre Test Self-Assessment and Review', 10th edition, contains over 200 new questions, many in clinical-vignette format, for a total of 500 questions. Concise explanations for each question are referenced to core books used by medical students during their pathology course. They explain not only why correct answers are correct, but why incorrect answers are wrong.
