Building for 21st Century Science examines how changing pedagogies in science education and research are reflected in the buildings that house them. The book presents case studies, with a Foreword by a distinguished research scientist, a Nobel Laureate specialised in the field of Genetics, and an introduction by Hilary Lewis, a well-known journalist and writer on the subjects of architecture and design. The Foreword speaks to the trend among the scientific community to engage in inter-disciplinary research in collaborative work settings. Examples are drawn from the work of Mitchell-Giurgola Architects and reflect the complex interactions among technology, diverse areas of investigation, collaboration and amenity. The book examines the critical role that architecture can play in synthesising them.Many science facilities were constructed during the mid-twentieth century, a period characterised by "brutalist" buildings that are often cold, inaccessible and inhumane. Laboratories in these facilities are not conducive to flexibility and change over time. Classrooms are frequently dark, organised for 'the sage on the stage' and do not encourage group interaction. Many of these buildings have now outlived their useful lives and are due for substantial refurbishment or outright replacement.Today, our standards have changed to consider buildings for science in much the same way as other academic building types: design objectives include natural light, flexible spaces, warm and engaging meeting areas, informal lounges, study alcoves--in essence, spaces that will create opportunities for people to meet, study and exchange ideas both formally and informally. Great things often happen during chance meetings.At the same time, buildings for science need to incorporate intense technological requirements such as fume hoods, robotic equipment, highly sensitive anti-vibration tables, clean rooms, NMR's and the utilities needed to serve them. In each case study, overcoming the challenges of rapidly changing technologies and creating buildings with the right balance between the art and science of teaching and research is key to its ultimate success.Building for 21st Century Science features six projects by Mitchell-Giurgola Architects including forward-looking institutions: NYU School of Medicine, Columbia, Cornell, Stony Brook and Rockefeller Universities and Norwalk Community College.
