This is a 300-page practical manual reviewing salient topics in Adolescent Medicine. This volume is practitioner-centered, focusing on the symptoms that bring a teenager to a clinician. Every chapter begins with a very brief clinical vignette, highlighting the patient's chief complaint or primary issue of concern. The handbook is divided into four primary sections: Assessment and Screening to include chapters such as Taking an Adolescent History or Screening for Violence and Abuse; Common Problems of Adolescence to include chapters such as Short Stature and Menstrual Disorders; Adolescent Emergencies including chapters such as Acute Chest Pain and Testicular Torsion and finally; and, Special Considerations to include chapters such as Teen Pregnancy/Options Counseling and Chronic Illness. The chapters follow a uniform format with vignette as described above, followed by salient features related to that topic and relevant clinical pearls such as history, physical exam, laboratory and diagnostic studies and treatment strategies. For each chapter, features that are unique to managing illness in adolescents are highlighted to distinguish them from adults or younger children. When applicable, a broad differential diagnosis is provided to help guide the reader. Finally, the reader's knowledge is tested for assimilation of material at the end of each chapter with a series of multiple-choice questions designed to be similar to Board-Style questions.
