Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) has been the historical hub of the city since the 10th century. It is here that the settlement began, the ducal castle was built, and the Cathedral was founded in the year 1000. The first fortified settlement originated at the crossing of principal south-north and east-west trade routes. Since the Middle Ages until today, a unique ecclesiastical enclave on the former island has preserved its unique atmosphere.
