Caravaggio actually Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610), was already a legend even in his own lifetime. While he was praised by some for his naturalism and revolutionary pictorial concepts, others deemed him the "destroyer of painting". Today he ranks amongst the most influential artists in the whole of art history.
