It is 1942. Eleven-year-old American Phillip Enright loves his life on the sunny Caribbean island of Curaçao, but the world is at war. When German submarines arrive off the coast, his mother decides to take him home to the safety of Virginia. But the submarines sink their ship, and Phillip finds himself in a lifeboat with Timothy, an old black sailor, and the ship's cat, somewhere in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. The wise old man knows the ways of the sea, and when they land on a tiny island, they may have a chance of surviving. But the shipwreck has made Phillip blind, and Timothy is ill. If they are to live, Phillip must be strong - and he must also grow up very quickly.
