Legal philosophy traditionally focuses on the courts, but not on the police - despite the fact that what the police do has considerable implications for what we understand law to be. Police writers in turn often overlook the subject of philosophy, and how philosophy can inform particular issues of police practice. In The Jurisprudence of Police, Thomas Vincent Svogun closes this gap by developing a new philosophy of law in tandem with a new theory of law enforcement, thus providing the basis for a general unified theory of law that reconciles the work of legislators and judges with the work of police. Much attention is devoted to the shift in the police paradigm from technically oriented professional law enforcement to problem-oriented community policing. This book integrates literature in legal philosophy and police theory to elaborate new integrative theory, introduce new concepts, and make recommendations for future public policy. "Thomas Vincent Svogun's The Jurisprudence of Police is truly invaluable as a philosophically-informed treatment of police work...there is no other book like this one. The novelty, if not the genius, of this volume is its undertaking to deal with the street, if you will, by digging all the way down to the moral foundations and common good of political society...a very effective bridge between policing and philosophy, between practical and moral prescription. The greatest virtue of this work is that Svogun is both fluent in legal philosophical analysis, and so obviously at home with policing...Supremely worthwhile.' - Gerard V. Bradley, Editor, The American Journal of Jurisprudence; Professor of Law, University of Notre Dame Law School, USA "Masterfully composed, thought-provoking, and astute, this book reflects a comprehensive grasp of the scholarship and research in bridging the fields of law and policing, and captures the essence of today's law enforcement. By uniting philosophy with sound practical judgment and by engaging the imagination, Svogun stimulates as much as he inspires. His book will motivate those in law enforcement to more actively and effectively meet the challenges of our complicated society. A required reading for any professional involved with law and law enforcement, including those engaged in private security." - Brian Bouthillette, Senior Vice President for Global Corporate Security and Director of Operations for Executive Protection Services, Bank of America; former Trooper, New York State Police "Far-reaching in its scope and profound in its analysis, Svogun's extraordinary book explores law enforcement in a way never before achieved. This is a must-read for police." - Major Paul Fitzgerald, Director of the Patrol Division, Providence Police Department (Retired) "Whether you are Bittner or the beat cop, this is a mandatory read. Professor Svogun, in most excellent fashion, connects the dots between policing and philosophy. In our rapidly changing and complex world, this volume is a blueprint for success for all police and academic professionals. An incredible achievement." - Daniel Racine, Chief of Police, City of Fall River, Massachusetts, Police Department
