One of Greece's most beloved contemporary writers, Kiki Dimoula is considered by many to be her homeland's national poet. She has published more than a dozen volumes of poetry, the first in 1952 and others in every decade since. In this new collection, 80 poems selected from throughout Dimoula's long career have been exactingly translated into English by award-winning translators Cecile Inglessis Margellos and Rika Lesser. The poems appear in both Greek and English, side by side. Dimoulis also provides an introduction to the volume in which she muses on the work of her translators, the process of translating, and her own poetry. Not surprising for a poet of the post-World War II era, Dimoulis deals with such central themes as hopelessness, insecurity, absence, and oblivion. And yet, she does surprise. She wields her words in unconventional ways, draws on their power to astonish, and manages through language to abolish the darkness and restore a sense of hope.
