Now in full color with hundreds of new illustrations, this essential resource covers the broad spectrum of laboratory procedures that technicians need to perform effectively in the practice setting. It presents step-by-step coverage of the basics of all laboratory work-ups - microbiology, hematology, immunology, parasitology, urinalysis, and cytology - providing the latest information on the most widely used tests such as complete blood count and immunologic assays. The addition of colour photos and tables throughout make for a much lighter read - the information is well presented. Procedure boxes are present throughout the text, and this makes the book a useful quick-reference guide to performing less familiar laboratory procedures in a clinical situation. The text also offers a detailed analysis of the chemistry and physiology behind the tests or procedures performed, which gives the reader a greater understanding of how results are generated. This is a huge advantage when interpreting results, particularly when unexpected results are obtained. This book would be a most welcome addition to the practice shelves. Although it may well be stationed in the practice laboratory, this does not do the text justice. It manages to bridge the gap between clinical veterinary medicine and laboratory medicine and, therefore, can provide useful information, from diagnostic sampling to the veterinary interpretation of results obtained. Despite being marketed for laboratory technicians, most veterinarians in practice would benefit from giving the book a quiet read.Veterinary Times, June 2008.
